Ford introduced a new 302 in 1987 that replaced the prior engine’s flat tappets with roller lifters. In 1987, they further amended that engine model to fire in the same order as a Chevy 351 “Windsor.”
Ford made this change to improve performance, and earlier versions of the 302 HO also used the firing order from the 351.
This version of the 302 was known for its durability, torque, and responsiveness. It featured in the Fox Body Mustangs of the era, and remains popular with enthusiasts of that era of Mustangs.
This version of the 302 remained one of the most popular Mustang engines until 1993. It could be found in Ford’s line of SVUs until the 21st century.
